Background of the Study:
Social media has become an influential platform for disseminating information on mental health, offering both support and awareness to young people. In Ede South Local Government, Osun State, various social media channels provide forums for sharing personal experiences, professional advice, and community support regarding mental health issues (Oluseyi, 2023). These digital platforms can destigmatize mental health challenges by normalizing open discussions and encouraging help-seeking behaviors among youths (Akinola, 2024). However, while social media has the potential to positively influence mental health attitudes, it can also propagate misinformation and unrealistic expectations that may exacerbate mental health issues. The dual role of these platforms necessitates a careful examination of how social media content shapes youth perceptions and behaviors related to mental health. This study explores the impact of social media on youth mental health attitudes in Ede South, identifying both beneficial influences and potential risks associated with digital mental health discourse (Babatunde, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Although social media is a significant channel for mental health awareness, its role in shaping youth attitudes in Ede South is not clearly understood. Conflicting messages and misinformation may contribute to misunderstandings about mental health. There is a need to investigate how these digital interactions affect youth perceptions and behaviors regarding mental well-being (Oluseyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To appraise the influence of social media on youth mental health attitudes in Ede South.

  2. To identify the positive and negative effects of digital mental health content.

  3. To propose strategies for improving online mental health communication.

Research Questions:

  1. How does social media influence youth attitudes towards mental health in Ede South?

  2. What are the positive and negative impacts of digital mental health content?

  3. How can social media be leveraged to promote accurate mental health awareness?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Social media significantly influences youth attitudes towards mental health.

  2. Exposure to accurate mental health information improves attitudes and reduces stigma.

  3. Misinformation on social media negatively impacts youth mental health perceptions.

Significance of the Study:
The study will offer important insights for mental health professionals, educators, and digital content creators to optimize social media strategies for promoting mental health awareness and support among youths in Ede South Local Government (Akinola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to appraising the role of social media in shaping youth attitudes towards mental health in Ede South Local Government, Osun State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Social Media: Digital platforms facilitating interaction and information sharing.

  2. Mental Health Attitudes: Beliefs and perceptions about mental health and well-being.
